We are proud to announce the addition of two Origin chocolates to our Belcolade Exclusive Collection range. Each is made with cocoa beans sourced from a Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farm, and will enable consumers to enjoy distinctive, great tasting chocolate, while also making a positive contribution to sustainable development.
The Rainforest Alliance (www.rainforest-alliance.org) is a non profit making organization which guarantees that the cocoa beans have been grown and harvested responsibly through protection of the environment and ethical working practices. Its sustainable cocoa program encompasses over 17 million acres of tropical land where cocoa provides a means of livelihood for up to 15 million farmers, 90 percent of whom are small holders, labourers and employees in processing factories.
The Rainforest Alliance, in partnership with cocoa and chocolate companies such as Belcolade, encourage cocoa farming practices which are sustainable over the long term, by maintaining a healthy environment and decent working condiditons. Only farms that meet the Rainforest Alliance's environmental and social standards are awarded certification. This ensures that production and farming methods are balanced against the needs of the local ecosystem, protecting its soil, rivers and wildlife. It also guarantees that farmers and farm workers have access to clean and safe living and working conditions, as well as schools, healthcare, decent wages, better markets for their crop and social rights and benefits.
